Infant Emergency
Home - Bet Elazraki Children's Home
Her name is Liat. She ate 2 hours ago. Here is a bottle and a sweater,”
says Miriam from the Department of Welfare. “Both parents are drug
addicts and her 10-year-old sister was caring for her so we had to remove
Liat from her home.” Fifteen minutes later, after all the paperwork
has been finished, Miriam feels confident as she leaves Liat with our
caring, professional staff. They immediately notice that her head is swollen
and that she is undernourished..
The National Infant Emergency Home receives infants from all over the
country without any prior notice. Many arrive with cuts and bruises on
their tiny bodies. The helpless victims of abuse who have cried out to
silent ears. Until now . . .
At our Infant Emergency Center we give lots of hugs and lots of love.
We also make sure that a pediatrician checks each infant that arrives.
An individual care program is prepared to meet the physical needs of each
infant. From inoculations to baby formulas, everything is recorded and
charted.
So how long will Liat remain with us? That really depends on several
factors. If she is unable to return to her own home, she will stay with
us until a good foster home is provided for her. If the parents give us
custody (something that rarely happens), she may be adopted.
Sometimes infants remain under our care in the Infant Emergency Center
for a month or even a year. For whatever time, Liat like all the infants,
will have a safe environment to help her develop both physically and mentally.
The Infant Emergency Center saves the lives of the most innocent of all
--- small, helpless babies.
